We are all at different stages in our business journey. Yet we continue to catch ourselves comparing where we are with where someone else is or where we think we should be.

Don't compare your beginning to someone else's middle. Jon Acuff

This is a terrible habit to get into. You are exactly where you need to be right now. Just keep believing that and keep moving forward.

One of the easiest ways to make yourself feel awful is to start comparing yourself to others. Stop! (Tweet this!) It’s sure-fire way to diminish your self-confidence and self-worth. It also serves no one.

We catch ourselves comparing our accomplishments or lack thereof with those who have made it huge.

We forget that these same people may have been in business for longer than us or this is their second business and they’re taking everything that didn’t work in their first business and tweaking this time around.

“I generally find that comparison is the fast track to unhappiness.”

— Jack Canfield

My boys and I ran in a 5k race this weekend. It was one of the best days of my life running it with them and seeing how strong they ran it.

Yes we trained and yes we were fit. But running among so many people, on a tight course can still throw you off.

You can easily catch yourself chasing someone who is in front of you, or hear someone coming up behind you and think, “I need to start picking up my pace because I am going to get passed any moment.”

The funny thing is, this is exactly how we feel in business and in life. We berate ourselves by thinking, “Oh know, I should be where that person is, I need to hurry up and get there.” Or “She’s catching me, I better watch out and get a move on or she’s going to be more successful than I am.”

Trust me it can happen to all of us.

I was incredibly impressed with my boys. I had my oldest son set the pace. Then my 8 year old slotted in behind him and I brought up the rear. We ran like that for most of the race, as the course was quite narrow at times.

We saw many people come flying up beside us with their heavy, labored, breathing, and excessive pounding of the pavement, all within the first 1 kilometer. I told the boys to keep their pace and not to worry about the runners around us. I said, “this is our race and we’ll run it our way.”

And what was remarkable was that we reeled in 95% of the people who passed us in that way. They all had gone out too hard, too fast and hit a wall. We saw loads that sprinted and then walked, sprinted and then walked. We just kept our pace, stayed focused and beat them all.

I talked to and coached my boys throughout the race. We even had a moment at the 3k mark where we listed everything we were thankful for. It included the gorgeous weather, seeing a butterfly, how grateful we were to be able to run and enjoy this activity as a family. (I told you I am a firm believer in gratitude. I practice it often)

My point in telling you this story is to set your pace in creating both your life and your business. Do what you need to do, keep at it, stop comparing yourself to others, it does no good. (Tweet this!) Don’t try to be where someone else is, just run your own race and you will be at the finish line before you know it.

My 10 year old said it was one of the best days he’ had. He can’t wait to do another race. And we have several coming up, so he’ll be very excited.

Quote by Oprah. Forget about the fast lane. If you really want to fly, just harness your power to your passion.

Do what you love and keep moving forward. You’ll be blown away at how things start to fall into place. (Tweet this!) Trust me, you will be tested and you will hit road hazards along the way. Figure out a way to get around or over any blocks. Don’t let them stop you from finishing your race. (Tweet this!)

Crossing the finish line while holding my boys’ hands was one of the highlights of my life. We all had the biggest grins on our faces.

So I ask you, if you are still comparing where you are today with where someone else is please do the following:

  • Look back at the past year or 3 years and acknowledge everything you’ve accomplished and just how far you’ve come.
  • Be grateful for where you are. (Remember, gratitude is such a key tool to implement into your daily life!)
  • Really look at your own strengths, and see your true value. This is a HUGE key to success.
  • Recognize that everything is happening in its own perfect time.
  • Focus on reaching your goals, don’t worry so much on how, just keep moving forward and stay focused. You will reach your dreams at the right time. Trust the universe.
  • Beating yourself up is a terrible habit that we all need to stop doing. Use that energy to uplift yourself or someone else.
  • Talk to someone who you know will be able to help you gain some perspective and remind you of everything you’ve already accomplished! We all need our personal cheerleader who is there to support us and remind us just how far we’ve come.

“Why compare yourself with others? No one in the entire world can do a better job of being you than you.” ~Unknown
